4 hours to 2007

Everyone is tired around here tonight.  Lily is almost asleep.  The rest of us just wish we were.

Fireworks are going off all around the neighborhood, so the dogs are beside themselves.  Skeeter is looking at me like I’m supposed to invite her up on my chair to “snuggle” or something.  Weezy is lying at my feet panting.  It’s like this twice a year – 4th of July and New Year’s.  Actually, Skeeter gets freaked out at Easter but that’s a different story.

Lily still doesn’t feel well, although I think she’s getting better.  The fever hasn’t dominated the last 24 hours like it did Friday.  She hasn’t had any Tylenol since noon, and she still hasn’t got her appetite back yet.  I expect she rounded the corner today and (hopefully) tomorrow will be a better day.

No big New Year’s Eve plans around here.  I’ll post my New Year’s Resolutions later.  Right now, I’m going to make chocolate fondue!

Stuffy Sunday

Poor Lily – she’s so pathetic when she’s sick.  Which isn’t often – I’d have to check the calendar to see when she was sick last.  It was mostly a sleepless night and this morning has had but a few moments of peace.  She’s eating a bit better today than she was yesterday, still running an off and on fever, but she’s still cranky, runny nose, and cough.  It’s a sad sight.

Breezy outside today, but still warm.  Change is in the air.  Cleaning up around the house today, trying to get control over my garage, clean out the cars and watch some football.

No big New Year’s Eve plans.  We’ll make some melted cheese, probably melt some chocolate.  I have some Lobster from a Christmas present so I might cook one of them.  My neighbor is smoking a bunch of meat  and he usually brings over some nice size samples – looking forward to that.  The way the last couple of nights have gone – I doubt anyone around here will be up much later than 10:30 or 11:00.

Sniffle Saturday

Poor Lily – she has a cold.  It’s mostly in her chest and throat right now – seems to feel ok, but sounds bad and she’s a bit whiney.  And she barely touched the Mickey Mouse pancakes I made this morning.

Nice day today – sunny, slight breeze.  Maybe too warm for those from up north – but perfect for native Floridians.

It’s New Year’s weekend.  I guess we’ll have to go to the grocery store.  I’m also thinking about getting a wireless keyboard – this corded one is giving me fits.  I still have to work on Lily’s sandbox, I need a new garage door opener and the Christmas lights need to come down.  All the decorations gotta go up in the attic.  And with Lily not feeling well, I’ll have no helper.

Is it Friday? Because it smells like a Tuesday

This holiday season has been screwy – I think it’s because the Eves have been on a Sunday.  I can’t seem to get a grip on what day it is or what the date is.  So, let’s just assume it’s Friday and it’s December.  After that, I have to try counting backwards from my birthday June 20th which in 2007 is on a Wednesday.

I don’t see much in the news worth commenting on save for the Gerald Ford funeral.  I like the ceremony afforded the Presidents even in death.  Very patriotic.  The Ford years were tough ones for me – 1st grade was brutal what with all the girlfriends I had.  And don’t even get me started on the 76 election.  Let’s just say I was on the wrong side of a certain city council campaign…ugly.

New Year Stats

Just read that the US population as we turn over the New Year will be about 300.8 million people.  We have a new birth every 8 seconds, a death every 11 seconds and a new immigrant every 27 seconds.

Finally Friday…

As usual, when I expect to work to be slow, it isn’t.  Kind of a busy day today, just adding to a very busy week next week.

Lily is napping (finally) and Diane has a friend (who knew?) coming to visit later this afternoon.

It’s a gorgeous December day in Central Florida – nice breeze out of the east, about 75 degrees out – all the windows are open.  Actually feels like a good day to take a nap!

You can tell Christmas is over around town.  The retailers have taken down everything – that was the case by Tuesday actually.  The big sign today is all the Christmas trees dumped in the median on the road.  I know for a fact that the Waste Management folks will take your tree – who are these people that have to dump their trees on the roadway?  I’ll bet they have something to do with the kind of people who lose one shoe on the road too.

Top o’ the mornin’

Late start around here this morning.  Everyone slept late – probably because some of us were up late watching FSU trounce UCLA…good game.

It’s Thursday – one of of Diane’s top 7 most favorite days.  And if it’s Thursday, it must be garbage day.  No garbage this past Monday due to the holiday, so I’m allowed twice as much at the curb…and I’ve done at least that.  I have more garbage than would fill a pickup truck – boxes, garbages, wrapping paper AND my recyclables.  I would not want to be a garbage man today.  Note to Garbage Man:  careful with that one bag – it’s got the remains of a chicken from my chicken soup I made yesterday and I’d hate to see you covered in chicken.

We are going to ToysRUs this morning to return one of Lily’s broken Christmas presents, Lowe’s to get a last piece for the sink from Hell and then home to get the house put back together.  The lawn needs cut and I haven’t seen the floor of my garage in weeks.  And I still need to get the tree to the curb – hopefully before the garbage men come.

So, have a nice day!

Go Noles

FSU taking on UCLA on ESPN right now.  Noles down by 3, early in the 2nd quarter.

I took on quite a project this afternoon.  My apologies to those who tried to tune in sink CAM.  You didn’t miss much – only the greatest disaster in my home renovation history.  Not too sure how much longer the CAM will last – this one has been pretty beat up over the last two years.  Might be time to look for another one.

Anyways – want to hear about my disaster?

Our present to each other for Christmas was a new kitchen sink and a new garbage disposal.  The old sink was acrylic and really showed its age.  Recommendation:  Never by the cheap acrylic sinks – you get what you pay for.  The new sink is very nice – cast iron, enamel finish.  At first, the only problem was the weight – the sucker must weigh 100lbs.  I got it positioned where I wanted it and had it propped up so I could get some sealant under the rim when – CRASH – it shifted and fell through the hole…and took out the plumbing with it.  It broke the cold water supply line which was spraying water out full blast and the main drain line.  Oh, what a mess.  Major mess.  I had my light under the sink where I had been working – it was now smashed by the sink and about 20 gallons of water was spraying out through the kitchen.

I started at 1:30 today – dropped the sink at 3:00, and made a trip to Lowe’s.  I worked on it until 5:00 and stopped for dinner and one more trip to Lowe’s.  Diane took care of Lily’s bath and I worked until 8:30.  I got the sink in (and braced so it won’t fall ever again), got the garbage disposal and dishwasher hooked up, the new faucet is on and I got one of the two water lines hooked up.  I don’t have a long enough supply hose for the other so I’ll be at Lowe’s tomorrow to finish the job.

Lily is off to bed – she was my little shadow all day.  She went with me this morning to Lowes and to Publix to do the grocery shopping.   She likes to antagonize me.  All day long I got – “Why did you drop the sink, Dad?” , “Why did you make a mess in the kitchen, Dad?”

Hump Day!

President Ford dies… Click here

It’s a cold morning in Cent Fla – we hit 36 last night in Brandon.  It’s sunny out and expecting to warm up to the mid 60’s so it should be a nice day.

Lily and I are upstairs playing (quietly, Mom is still sleeping).  Lily is in good mood this morning – making up songs, playing with her toys, reading her books.

Not sure what we are doing today. We’ll probably take down the decorations and try and get the Tree to the curb for the garbage men tomorrow.  I’ve only been working when needed this week.  So far, only a few calls.  It’s the silence before the storm – next week will be crazy.

Our internet was down for a good bit of time yesterday.  Verizon has been laying new lines in the neighborhood – that might have been why.

Only 363 shopping days to Christmas!

It’s all over.  Our Christmas began around 8:30 this morning and the last present was opened some time around 4:30.  Wow – what a thrill Christmas was with Lily today.  I think she had an amazing day – moving from one toy to another.  She seemed to like everything about our day – beginning with surveying the mess Santa made with the cookies (he left he fireplace gate open too!)  Lily wrote Santa a letter last night, left cookies and some carrots from our garden for the reindeer.  When Lily got up this morning, the previously empty living room was filled nearly to the brim with presents.  She didn’t know where to start.  And as 8:30 came around tonight – she didn’t know where to end.

At one point this evening, I scooped Lily up and gave her a hug.  I asked her if she had fun today and she said she had.  I told her I loved her and she said, “I love Santa”.  I guess I know where I rank.

I need a little while to get pictures up on the webpage, and I’ll try and get some video up – especially for those of you who didn’t catch Lily CAM.

Still going…

It’s 3pm – we are still opening (and playing with) presents.  The living room looks like Princess Headquarters.  Lily is in la-la land right now – she doesn’t know what to play with first.  And like I said – there are still two dozen presents to go!

Lily CAM is on!

Lily’s NFL picks

For the second time (she’s only made picks twice), Lily has correctly picked more winners in Sunday’s NFL games than I did.  (I only take the favorites)  She picked the winner in 10 out of 12 games so far with two games to go today.  I don’t know what her system is, all I know is she needs to see a graphic of the team’s logos and she decides based on that.

Half way…

Christmas morning started about 8:30 around here.  We’ve hit the half way mark and we are stopping for lunch and naptime.

Lily is pretty much exactly the way you’d expect a 2 year old to be.  Toys and wrapping paper everywhere.  She’d open one toy and then play with it.  I’ve been assembling and installing batteries as fast as I can all morning.  I still haven’t got to “sticker duty” on her new doll house.

No pictures posted yet – I’ll need a little while.  We’ve taken lots of good video and I’ll try to post some of that too.  Lily CAM has been on all morning.  It’s off now – I’ll turn it on after nap time – around 1pm.

Hope you are having a nice morning!  Merry Christmas!

Christmas Letter

Most Christmas letters brag about their families, their accomplishments, blah, blah, blah.

We’ve received about 5 such letters, so I assume you’ve received your fair share.  If you want to know what we’ve done this year, you can read Lily’s Journal or talk to us once a week or so.  Or, you can take any of the letters you’ve received and cross out the names and replace them with ours.

You know what would be interesting?  A letter about what we DIDN’T accomplish this year.  What didn’t happen?

Dear Friend/Family/Acquaintance,

2006 didn’t see a lot things for our family.  Lily hasn’t mastered the finer talents of eating at the table without needing hosed off afterwards.  I seriously doubt by the end of 2007 she’ll know which fork to start with – we are just hoping to improve the “food on the floor  - to – food in her belly” ratio.

We failed to find a way to afford live in help.  Nope, no built in babysitter, cook, maid or lawnboy for us.  We are thankful the mail comes directly to the house – UPS even comes all the way to the door for no extra charge.  Home repairs and improvements are still Vinnie’s responsibility – perhaps next year we’ll get to some of those dripping faucets and broken fence slats.  The drip in the master bedroom isn’t too bad and we didn’t have to move the bed too far to one side to keep dry.

We didn’t see the Grand Canyon, we didn’t visit
Europe.  We did use a coupon for ice cream one day and we made several visits to the library.

I am happy to say none of us experienced any major medical setbacks.  Lily still incurs the occasional wound to her fingers while she eats (food in, fingers out, THEN chew) and Diane’s pulled hamstring suffered vacuuming the stairs hampers her just when she vacuums – so just once a month.  Vinnie has assumed cooking duties and he continues to expand his knowledge of what the expiration dates on products mean.  It is agreed that “Use By” and “Sell By” dates can be confusing and it is fortunate PeptoBismol has no such date.

We have a lot to look forward to in 2007.  Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas everyone.  We would have included a photo with this Christmas letter but Lily still has stitches on her forehead and Diane’s black eye is still noticeable.  Maybe next year!

Merry Christmas!

Christmas Eve – finally!  I think Christmas Eve on a Sunday has led to a lot of build up and hype all week.  It hardly feels like a Sunday and it’s felt like Christmas was taking forever to finally get here.

We went to the grocery store this morning – not too crowded, but certainly a lot more people there than would normally be there for a Sunday morning.

The house is cleaned, most of the presents are wrapped and Lily is doing her best to be on her best behavior.  I’m sure we’ll have Lily CAM on tomorrow morning.  In fact, I might even turn it on when we go to bed for the night.  Not sure what Lily will do when she comes down and sees everything.   There is NOTHING under the tree now and there won’t be anything until she goes to bed, so it should make quite a sight when she sees it in the morning.

Cloudy, overcast and humid today.  No rain yet, but tomorrow morning is forecast to be soggy.

Good Saturday mornin’

We are off to Grandma’s house this morning.  We don’t have to hit the road until after 10am.

The weather is clearing after a stormy night.  Almost an inch of rain overnight, but blue skies this morning.

Lily is playing nicely, still in her pajamas while Diane and I bustle about getting ready for the road trip.  Hope you watched Breakfast CAM this morning.  Might leave it on while we are gone.

Our Christmas tree is a dud this year.  Crooked trunk, drying out real fast now, looking like it’s been inside for almost 4 weeks.  Lily hung candy canes on it yesterday.  Three days before Christmas and I could barely find candy canes in the store – the grocery stores, Lowes, Home Depot have already un-decorated.  That’s what they get for starting Christmas before Halloween this year.

Holly jolly, holly jolly…

Made another foray into town this morning, stopped by the office and ran an errand or two.  It’s kind of frantic out, but not too bad.  I was surprised at the mood of some folks I came across.  I saw a car window that someone had painted a message on to the car’s owner…”Learn how 2 park”.  Nice.

I had to wait in line at the Honey Baked Ham Company for our Christmas ham.  The line was about 40 minutes long – lots of people waiting.  I had my phone (which rang 6 times – all work related! – what’s up with that?) so I was entertained a little.  I had a guy behind me – maybe 6′ tall, easily 350lbs and to make matters worse, he didn’t have very good queueing etiquette.  He was breathing down my back the entire time!  Come on buddy – take a step back – you’ll get your ham.

The weather is a changin’…cloudy and a little more breezy today.  Seventy (70%) chance of rain tomorrow and Sunday.  Starting to clear out by Monday and nice again on Tuesday.  Could be worse – it could be cold!

I have to work today?

Yes, I’m at the office.  The mail is piling up, things need to be shipped…yada, yada, yada.

One quick thing… Rule #17 for Vinnie’s Vlog – No Hollywood gossip.  I get to approve any and all comments made to my Vlog before they get posted.  Sorry Bill – your comments violated Rule #17.

I decided I have a Favorite Strip Mall.  It has everything I like – a cellphone store, a Starbucks, drycleaner and Crispers (it’s a deli).  The parking is terrible – in fact, Diane won’t drive there at all.  But I love this Strip Mall.

Lily uttered a new phrase this morning.  I only heard it once and I don’t really remember what it was said in response to as it was still early this morning….”What’s up with that?”  Depending on how she uses it, I’ll bet that wears out its welcome.

The stockings are hung…

I think I’ve finished my shopping today.  I went to Toys R Us and the mall.  Both were crazy.  I saw an elderly gentleman – maybe 70 or 80 years old.  He was wearing a hat I’ve seen many Veterans wear – it had pins on it from foreign wars.  I recognized Saipan.  Anyways, it was just funny to see this living piece of history – this guy who has seen things I can’t imagine seeing – this guy who put his life on the line – asking if his wife could get any of the makeup packages the store sold with the gift card he was going to buy her.

I went to Brookstone.  How many different ways can they create to massage one’s feet anyways?   They had foot massagers to use while you sleep, while you are in the bathtub and while you watch TV.  My question is…why would your feet hurt so bad if you had time to lay around in the bed, in the tub or on the sofa watching TV?

Took Lily to get a haircut today.  I think we actually do a pretty good job when we do it ourselves, but once in a while, we splurge and treat Lily to a professional.  We did the same thing with her vaccinations.  I digress…. this stylist butchered poor Lily.  The bangs aren’t straight.  She has a tail(!) on the back of her head.  That was the first thing we fixed tonight.  Off with her tail.  Guess we won’t be going back there.  Lily spent the rest of the day telling everyone she had a bad haircut.

Nice night tonight – mid to low 70’s out.  The windows have been open all day.  The bad news is we have a front coming through for Christmas.  Saturday and Sunday’s weather are supposed to be stormy.

Long, busy day…

We were moving early this morning as we had to be across town by 9:00am for Zoo School and Meet the Reindeer.  Lily and about 15 2-4 year olds gathered for a story about reindeer and a snack.  Lily, as always, sits as good as any kid in the room for story time – usually mesmerized by the story teller – like she’s never seen anyone who can read before.

Afterwards, we got to meet the reindeer – Lily petted one on the nose.  I’m surprised she didn’t comment on the reindeer that relieved itself right in front of us – that’s usually something she picks right up on.   She also didn’t mention the smell, which was quite strong as  there were 6 reindeer in a rather small space.

After meeting the reindeer, Lily met Santa (for the third time this year).

Lily fell asleep on the way home.

Later this afternoon, we had some errands to run – post office, UPS.  At the post office, I asked Lily if she had anywhere she thought we needed to go while we were out.  Her answer…”I probably need to go to Toys R Us”.

She was up a bit later tonight – 9pm – but in such a good mood, neither of us really thought about putting her to bed.

Quiet Sunday

Quiet Sunday around here today.  Lily is napping, as is her mother.

I’m waiting for football to start, and working on my webpage a little.  Bucs are at Chicago – one of the NFL’s worst versus one of the NFL best.  I’ll watch a little, although I’m inclined to turn it off as soon as they remind us what the Buc’s record is when playing in temps below 40 degrees which usually happens right after they remind us that the Bucs have NEVER returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

Of course, I don’t remember when a Buc spit at another player.  Click here for story

The sun is finally out today after more than a week of clouds.  After clouds for a week, it seems so bright outside.

Just a week until Christmas!

Well, it’s Friday…

We’ve made it to the 15th of the month.  10 days to Christmas.

Had a few errands to run this morning, had lunch and now I’m thinking about getting the heck out of dodge.

I don’t think I’m coming in next week except to check mail and make sure I have no incoming UPS.  Nice thing about being the only one in the office this Christmas – no one to share the presents I get from some suppliers.  I got a package from Hershey’s that you wouldn’t believe – probably more chocolate than my house can eat in a year.  And that was from one company!

I’m going to leave now – stop and vacuum my car out and probably head home.

Have a happy Friday!!!

New look…

Oooo, fancy.  Like the new look?  I can change the colors as I want.  Maybe the Vlog colors will reflect my mood.  Maybe the season.  Maybe they’ll reflect my frustrations, my true feelings, my satisfaction with life.  Or maybe I’ll just use the default colors.  I mean, you don’t come here to hear about my frustrations or my feelings.  You come here for the occassional Lily story, maybe a picture or two.  You come here to see what I’ve posted and to see if it’s something I’ll get in trouble for when Diane reads it.  That’s got to be it.  I don’t get into politics and I don’t use this as a forum to speak my mind on anything remotely personal  (although, some of you have picked up on my subtle and cryptic references to such).

No, you come here for your own reasons and that’s fine.  In fact, I’ve had almost 5,000 hits since I started this Vlog back in October!

Is it Thursday already?

I think I missed the garbage men this morning.  What are they doing all the way into my neighborhood, down my cul-de-sac at 7:30am anyways?

Lily and Diane are at art class this morning.  Her art class got so full they had to divide it into two classes.  Her class now starts at 10:45, a bit later than it used to be.  She really likes art class.

She’d like singing classes too, I think.  This morning, she was sitting at the table waiting for her breakfast.  Everything was on the table, except I hadn’t poured the milk in the cereal yet as we were waiting for Diane.  As she waited, she sang.  We all know Lily’s favorite song from The Little Mermaid.  The lyrics go something like…

“Look at this stuff.  Isn’t it neat?  Wouldn’t you think my collection is complete?”

As she waited for her milk, she sang… “Look at this milk.  Isn’t it neat?  Wouldn’t you think my rice krispies is complete?”

It really isn’t uncommon for her to make up a verse or two to just about everything, whether she is feeding the dog, washing her hair or waiting for her breakfast.

Why?

Why am I seeing people with fake bullet hole stickers on their cars?  Do they want me to think that they live in a worse section of town than I do?  Maybe they just left a bank holdup?  I’ve seen fake bullet holes, fake baseballs crashing through windshields.  And what’s next…fake flat tires?  Or for those with Volvo’s in New Jersey, maybe a fake deer wrapped around the fender?

MNF

Bears v. Rams last night.  Good game, too.  Bears, I think, clinched their division, althought I haven’t looked that up yet.

It’s 14 weeks into the season.  Fourteen games that weirdo Kornheiser has been in the booth for Monday Night Football.  Not only is his the worst hair on TV, he is the worst sports commentator out there.  I watched a little of the game but I’ve got to the point that I can’t stand him so much that I have to watch with the volume off.  He’s got to go.

And how come everytime I turn on MNF, Jim Belushi is in the booth?

Joel predicts the NFL Cowboys of Dallas “win out”…that is, they win their remaining games…You heard it here first.

One more thing – why is it good things tend to be referred to by their initials – the title of this entry to mention one.  JFK, FDR?  Just a thought.

Slow Tuesday

Not much going on today.

Kind of slow at work.

Lily is in a good mood.  I’ve heard reports of her singing at the top of her lungs during yet another trip to the mall.  When I went home for lunch today, she told me she bought me a green shirt (probably the one I told her to tell Mommy I wanted for Christmas)  Note to self:  explain the concept of “keeping a secret” to Lily.

It’s quite mild today – mid 70’s, nice breeze, a few puffy white clouds.   Except for a chance of rain on Thursday, that’s the forecast through Monday it seems.  I got an email from my Alaskan friend, Darrell.  He writes….

Just wanted to make sure you knew how I was suffering this holiday season, my first winter in Alaska. Our hights have been in the 20’s with snow almost everyday.   I haven’t seen the sun since before Thanksgiving and I haven’t been outside, at all, since November 30th.   We have no Christmas tree, no decorations outside – even if I could get out, the 45mph wind would blow them down.

snow.jpg

Anyways – you get the idea.  If you ask me, sounds like Darrell (who moved to Alaska voluntarily I might add and passed on an opportunity to spend the winter in Texas) is a bit of a wuss.  Nice picture though – thanks Darrell!

RUN!

Fox News is covering a smoke stack implosion live this morning in Tampa.  It’s a very tall, concrete stack from an old phosphate plant.

What makes it unusual is that three guys are beating on the base of it with sledge hammers until it starts to teeter, then they are going to run for it!

On one hand, I’m thinking – cool…give me a hammer.  On the other hand, I’m thinking – what are these idiots thinking?  Actually, if I was there, the “cool…give me a hammer” hand would win.

13 days to Christmas

We got most of our Christmas shopping done this weekend.  The crowds weren’t too bad, although we found ourselves having to park a lot further away from the stores than we usually do.

The line to see Santa was probably an hour or more long, judging by where we stood when we waited 20 minutes last week.

I’ve got to order my Christmas presents for customers today.  Some customers were nice, others just so-so.  The good thing is this year I dont’ have to share the incoming presents!!!!

Lily is off to Gymboree this morning, the first time since Nov 30th.  The weather is amazing today – even for December.  Highs in the mid to low 70’s and hardly a cloud in the sky.  We slept with the windows open last night and it was perfect sleeping weather.

Wow, any one see the Cowboys get clobbered last night?  Ouch.  Looks like Lily correctly picked 9 games yesterday.  Good enough for second place in our football pool.  Good enough to beat me and Diane.
